The earliest recollection we have of Welbeck Colliery cricket Club is a 1924 fixture card. This then is the year we claim to have been formed although it is likely to have been earlier than this.

The club was affiliated to Longden Terrace Miners Welfare which was the second Welfare Trust of Welbeck Colliery based in Warsop and only cut its links last year. The original ground on Oakfield Lane, Warsop was used until 2007 and was shared with Welbeck Colliery FC who had a ground at the top end of the cricket field. This was sold in the late sixties following the demise of the football club and houses were built on the site.

In the early years, the teams played in the Notts and Derby Colliery Alliance before joining the Bassetlaw League in the 1950’s.  Many of the players came from the mine, in fact in the early years the Colliery manager used to Captain the team.  As with many Colliery teams many generations of the same family turned out for the club over many years.

The first stalwart of the club was probably Ike Careless, a tough Colliery Overman, that played the game the same way. He carried the team in the post war period and through the 50’s before being joined by names that are still recognized today through following generations. Roy Hunt and John Antcliff opened the batting, Reg Joy bowled slow left arm, and the Bennett Brothers Neil and Mick were all-rounders. Brian Herbert was a hard hitting batsman and Amby Taylor, a young fast bowler and Maurice French also fitted an all rounders berth.
